    Passionflower is a beautiful, exotic looking plant that's known for its soothing effects on body and mind. The medicinal benefits of passion flower weren't widely recognized until the 19th century, but it's been used by native people groups of North and South America for centuries.

    The common name "passion flower" comes from Spanish missionaries who thought that it resembled a crucifix. It became symbolic of the whole crucifixion story of Jesus Christ, which is also referred to as "the Passion."

    What Is Passion Flower?

    Passionflower is native to the more tropical regions of the U.S., mainly southeastern states. It has also been widely grown and used in South America for thousands of years.

    There are many different species of passion flower, but the one used for its medicinal benefits is Passiflora incarnate. It goes by other names like maypop and wild apricot and is the state wildflower of Tennessee.

    Passionflower is a perennial vine that grows fairly quickly and is drought-tolerant. It blooms with large and striking flowers that are typically blue-purple. An egg-shaped fruit will develop that ripens from green to yellow and is eaten by both humans and wildlife.

    Although the herb is referred to as passion flower, all parts of the plant can be used for health benefits. Most often the leaves, stems, and flowers are used, but the roots have also seen frequent use in traditional medicine practices.
